Where will they be in ten years?

We asked 75 of our students at this year's debate camp what they wanted to be when they grew up, who their role model was, and why they thought debating was important to achieving their career goals. Here are a few of our favourite responses.
Serge: Architect.
I think debating will one day help me influence government policies.
What do you want to do for a career? Architect.
Who is your role model? Gustav Eiffel, the architect of the most attractive place in the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
How will debating help you achieve your goals? Eiffel had trouble convincing his government to keep the Eiffel Tower which was only restored for the World Exposition. I think that debating will one day help me influence government policies in the field and it's also going to help me influence communities.
Angela: Lawyer.
Debate has helped me run projects in my school now. Debate will help me run the world in future :)
What do you want to do for a career? Business lawyer
How will debating help you to achieve your goals? When I first joined debate, I wanted to improve my public speaking skills and I thought there was no better place to do it. However, I have learned that that debate is more of problem solving and logically reasoning the context in which we live. All these skills will help me some day when I become a business lawyer because I have found a way to combine this passion for debating and my academic interests. Debate has helped me run projects in my school now. Debate will help me run the world in future :)
Nana: Software developer.
One of the things I want to do in the future is to encourage girls in my country to do computer.
What do you want to do for a career? Software development.
Who is your role model? Clarisse Iribagiza, CEO of Rwandan mobile technology firm HeHe Ltd.
How will debating help you achieve your goals? One of the things I want to do in the future is to encourage girls in my country to do computer [sic] and I will only be able to convince them if I am a debater.
Joyce: Airline pilot.
If I become the second female pilot (in Rwanda) I will be able to engage and encourage women to be a part of science and technology...
What do you want to do for a career? Airline pilot.
Who is your role model? Esther Mbabazi (the only female pilot in Rwanda)
How will debating help you achieve your goals? My role model is Mbabazi Esther (the only female pilot in Rwanda). So if I become the second female pilot I will be able to engage and encourage women to be a part of science and technology because I gained the skills of convincing people through debating and speaking.
Patrick: Writer, inventor, engineer, leader.
From becoming an inventor to a writer to an engineer...I wasn't quite sure but now I know I want to become a leader...
What do you want to do for a career? Writer, inventor, engineer, and leader.
How will debating help you to achieve your goals? Before I started debating I had all kinds of dreams and aspirations ranging from becoming an inventor to a write to an engineer and all of this. I wasn't quite sure but now I know I want to become a leader. I haven't exactly chosen which kind of leader yet but all I want is to impact other people's lives mainly in my community in a respect of human rights and the development of my country socially, economically and culturally.
Stella: CEO.
When I am done with school...I will be the CEO of an architectural and construction firm.

How will debating help you achieve your goals? Debate will mainly improve my leadership skills. When you are a CEO of any company, you need confidence, critical thinking and obviously convincing arguments.
